The Green Mile

Green Mile is a prison in Cold Mountain Penitentiary.  The story started as a flashback as Paul Edgecomb remembered an inmate in a death row in his past life. There was a black man imprisoned and accused of raping and killing two girls.  However the black prisoner named John is shy, soft spoken and very emotional.  John later revealed his extraordinary powers by reviving mouse, healing Paul's Urinary Tract Infection and heals the terminally ill wife of the Warden.

Later on the story, John discovered the real killer of the two young girls after Wild Bill grabbed his arm.  There was an instance that John transferred the illness of the warden’s wife to Percy who in turn shoots Wild Bill.  He also showed Paul what happened and gave a part of himself.  The sad part is, though John is innocent, his execution continued.


This is a very dramatic story where a lot of points can be taken.  Here we can see that sometimes innocent suffer for others to be saved.  Another point is we cannot really judge the person by the way they look on the outside.  Overall this is a nice movie.  As a high school student, I ended up watching this film with a teary eye.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green

The story is about a couple who desperately want a child of their own.  Devastated by the news given by the doctors wherein they were told they can’t conceive, the couple decided to write the characteristics of the child they want in a note pad, put it in a box and bury it in a backyard garden.

After a thunderstorm which affected only their home apparently, they found out that the box was smashed into pieces and found a boy covered in mud.  The boy’s name is Timothy and he has an extraordinary feature, he has leaves growing on his legs.  The couple tried to adopt Timothy and sent the child to school.  Timothy on the other hand knows that he won’t last long with the couple and will eventually disappear as he fulfills the qualities of the child that the couple wants.  In the end, the couple adopted a daughter.

This particular film describes how a child completes a family.  Sometimes in the life of other people, they experience this kind of trial of not having a child.  This kind of trial is devastating indeed but let us not lose hope.  We need to be optimistic in life for the happiness sometimes can be found on the people that surround us.

The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey

After the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson decided to produce its prequel. The Hobbit leads us to how it all began. It is about the journey of Bilbo Baggins who is on a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor which has been taken over by the dragon Smaug.  He is accompanied by Gandalf the Grey, and by the thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield, a legendary dwarf warrior.

If you are a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit is a MUST to see movie which will open in theaters on December 14, 2012.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

The story of this episode started on a flash back where Smeagol murdered his friend for the ring. Cast away by his community, he suffered a lot and turned into a creature known as Gollum. Moving forward in the story, Gollum led Frodo and Sam in the shortcut going to Mount Doom.

Aragorn with the rest of the Fellowship of the Ring joined by King Theoden and his Rohirims, enjoyed a brief taste of victory from the Battle of Helm's Deep and in Isengard. Gondorians by this time is suffering heavy losses in Osgiliath. Aragorn realizes that they need to aid Gondor, he convinced Theoden to ride with him.

On the way to Gondor, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli went to Dimholt so they can get help from the undead. Before Minas Tirith fall before the enemies, Rohan arrived just in time and crushed the forces of Orcs. But Mordor has another surprise, the Mumakil. This was countered by the forces of undead brought by Aragorn. They then marched towards Mordor to distract the eye of Sauron and the Orcs.

 Frodo was able to destroy the ring vanquishing the Eye of Sauron once and for all. In the end, Aragorn was crowned King of Gondor. Amongst the three episode, this was the most exciting part. It's really like "good conquering evil." overall the 3 episodes of Lord of the Rings are great movies and perfect for families. Though parental guidance is advised, it is still one of the greatest movies of all times.

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

This is the 2nd episode of the "Lord of the Rings."  Sauron's army is growing.  Saruman on the other hand together with his forces the Uruk Hai is getting ready to launch an attack against Rohan. The fellowship has gained a few allies from the old alliance of men and elves.  Frodo and Sam found Gollum and led them the way towards Mount doom.  Gandalf is now back in action after surviving the battle againts Balrog, he is no known, Gandalf the White.

The most exciting part of this story is the "Battle of Helm's Deep."  Urukhai with 10,000 strong against Rohan with 300 men!  While waiting for the enemy, Haldir led a batallion of Elves to fight alongside men. Gandalf is on his way looking for the Rohirim riders.  The battle begins by releasing arrows from men and Elves killing dozens of Uruk Hai. But the forces of enemy is way too many that defences has been breached. Just as when everything seems lost, Gandalf and Eomer arrived with 2000 Riders pushed back the enemy back to the forest of Hourns.  The Ents attacked Isengard to seek revenge on Saruman's betrayal. In the end they collapsed a dam annihilating Uruk Hai forces under the command of Saruman. Frodo was confronted by a Righwraith in Osgiliath but he was saved by Sam. Faramir who captured the two Hobbits finally decided to free them.

This episode is definitely better than the 1st.  The peak of the story is there with a great victory in the end.  This is where the "Lord of the Rings" drew a lot of fans young and old. There were boring parts though.  The meeting of the Ents was really boring and the part where Eowyn is trying to show her love for Aragorn.  Overall it's a  must see movie.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The long lost ring of Sauron has finally been found. It is in the hands of the unlikely creature, a Hobbit named Frodo.  When Gandalf discovered that it is the long lost ring of the Dark Lord Sauron, he and the alliance of men, elves and dwarves then asked Frodo to take a quest of taking the ring to Mount Doom to destroy it.  Accompanied by his friends, Merry, Pippin, Samwise, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir and Gimli, together they accepted the challenge of going along with Frodo in taking the ring to Mordor.  This formed the Fellowship of the Ring.

The quest put the fellowship through a lot of danger because of Saruman's wizardry.  In the Mines of Moria, Gandalf confronted Balrog the ancient demon of fire and shadow. In the end, Gandalf and Balrog fell into the Abyss of the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. The rest went to Lothlórien and was temporarily sheltered by Galadriel and Celeborn.  This is where Frodo was given the Phial of Galadriel. After resting from the elven realm, the fellowship wwas attacked by the Urukhai.  The attacked took the life of Boromir whilst Merry and Pippin was captured. Frodo escaped and was later joined by his friend Sam.

In this story, it cannot be denied that men can easily be swayed by greed and power.  This does not happen only on movies like this but it does happen in real life as well. The movie also teaches us that there are true fiends that will go with you no matter what happens but there are friends as well that will lead you to fall.  The story teaches us the importance of teamwork. Together the fellowship stands out, but divided, they started to fall.
